District Court 9

The Ninth Judicial District Court of the Louisiana District Courts is located in Alexandria, Louisiana, and presides over Rapides Parish. It is one of Louisiana's 42 judicial districts. The court has both civil and criminal jurisdiction. In the civil realm, its authority extends over contract and property rights, personal injury claims, marriage and family matters and estate cases, among other things. In criminal matters, the court's jurisdiction extends to misdemeanors, felonies, and violations of parish ordinances committed within Rapides Parish, as well as all criminal proceedings. The court also handles juvenile issues: cases with juvenile offenders, delinquency, adoption, etc. The Ninth Judicial District Court is composed of seven elected judges and a hearing officer appointed by the judges. Two judges preside over the criminal docket, one presides over the juvenile docket, and the remaining four judges preside over the civil docket. Elected judges serve a six-year term.

The First Judicial District of the Louisiana District Courts covers the same geographical boundaries as Caddo Parish. It is one of Louisiana's 42 judicial districts. The courthouse is located in Shreveport and contains both civil and criminal courts.

 |  SUPREME COURT 

Composed of the seven justices, the Louisiana Supreme Court is the court of last resort in the state. Louisiana Supreme Court Justices are elected to staggered ten-year terms from seven election districts. The court has supervision and control over all lower courts, administrative and procedural rule-making powers, and may assign a sitting or retired judge to any court. It considers applications for writs to review individual cases decided by the five courts of appeal and considers both criminal and civil remedial writ applications. The Supreme Court has jurisdiction over disbarment proceedings, petitions for discipline and removal of judges, and fact questions involving its own appellate jurisdiction.

The Louisiana Free Enterprise Institute ("LFEI") is an organization founded by the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, dedicated to advocating on behalf of the principles of free enterprise and promoting public policy that fosters an environment for economic growth, leading to efficient, effective government and protecting the rights of Louisiana taxpayers. To that end, LFEI will employ a number of tools including sound policy research, issue advocacy, activist training and mobilization as well as free enterprise issue education seminars to ensure economic growth for the state of Louisiana.
